Societies and cultures around the world look up to their athletes as heroes. Sports can provide an environment that is rich in influencing cultural, personal, and social attitudes as well as valued behaviors. Athletes are powerful role models. They potentially have an extensive platform and are among the most influential people in society. The idea that sport builds character is not new. Social character refers to honesty, integrity, responsibility, fairness, and respect. Unfortunately, sports may not build positive moral character. It is often overlooked or deemphasized in the sporting environment. The state of sport today is a win at all cost mentality. Athletes have bought into this philosophy as seen by the incidence of bad behavior at all levels of sport. It is becoming clear that athletic experiences may be reinforcing attitudes and behaviors that are opposed to positive character traits seen in fair play and moral justice. There is a need for education and intervention in sports related to character building. Moral character can be developed by educating athletes on sportsmanship, positive relationships, and role modeling. The values learned through sport can transfer to other aspects of an athletes life.
The TEAM EXCEL Project provides a unique opportunity to reach athletes within a team structure in order to positively influence team members. Evidence will be presented using unique and unusual approaches. The hope is that athletes will be inspired to pursue dreams in such a way as to use their influence to create an impact in others' lives. In addition, they will be encouraged to take bigger and bolder steps to attain these dreams. the tag line, "If I can do it, you can do it", will provide motivation to others that it is never too late to pursue your dreams. This pursuit of dreams should be practiced within the boundaries of moral character. Team EXCEL Project will deliver programming to collegiate, interscholastic, club, rarefactional, afterschool, etc. sports teams. Challenging activities, core values, and lessons learned include character development, leadership, role modeling, and dream pursuit.
The goal is to revitalize the value of moral character in the sport setting and to society in general. Athletes are powerful influencers. They will serve as mentors to continue the positive influence, and teach how to be part of the solution. Relationships will be built among groups that will expand understanding, loyalty, and enthusiasm that can spread throughout teams and the community.
